How do I measure for a new garage door?

To measure for a new door, take 5 key measurements:

  1. Width of the opening
  2. Height of the opening
  3. Side room (left & right of the opening)
  4. Headroom (space above the opening)
  5. Backroom (distance from the garage opening to the back wall)

How much headroom is required above a residential garage door?

There are different lift types for garage doors. When we are dealing with “Standard” lift, please find below the headroom required based on the type of hardware.

Type Radius: 12 inches Radius: 15 inches
2 inch Commercial Door height: 8 to 12 ft. 12 inches N.A.
2 inch Commercial Door height : over 12 ft. 13 ½ inches 15 inches
3 inches Industrial N.A. 15 inches

Special Notes : * If you have a trolley-type operator, make sure to add 2 ½ inches.

IMPORTANT: Do “Standard” lift movement if you have over 2 ft. (61 cm) of headroom. Make sure to use a “High Lift” movement. It is necessary to allow clear space above the garage door.

For Low Headroom garage, the minimum headroom requirement is this following:
